No Dream Deferred's 2019/2020 inaugural season:
Black Boy Joy meets Black Girl Magic*
It’s been two and a half years since India Mack and myself wrote down our plans to begin to build an equitable, inclusive,community-anchored, professional theatre in New Orleans. We have produced several art events over the years and have garnered the support of so many New Orleanians.
At times, we have both wondered,“ What in the world are we doing?’ It’s easy to guess why this work may at times seem impossible. We are both theatre artists, mothers and career women. We have limited time, resources, nerves, and connections. We don’t always know the right questions to ask and we, for sure ,don’t have all the answers. But we do collectively possess is something that’s hard to beat … Black Girl Magic.
Black Girl Magic is alive, hypnotizing, and infectious; it perseveres, overcomes and THRIVES! Have you ever experienced Black Girl Magic? Many folks know just what I am talking about, and can tell you first hand, it is an unforgettable experience.
I am proud of our “stick-to-it ness”, which has brought us to our inaugural season. A season bursting at the seams with Black Boy Joy and Black Girl Magic. A season that has been created with New Orleans and the people who live HERE in mind. But none of this would be possible without the support of so many. Just like the students, parents and church members that helped Mary McLeod Bethune take her initial investment of $12.50, all the way to the complete building of Bethune Cookman College [formerly Educational And Industrial Training School For Negro Girls], we too have been fortunate in the fact that No Dream Deferred is based in New Orleans and supported by this particular community---A community that takes pride in its culture and fully understands the mantra "Nothing For Us, Without Us!"
This first season is titled: Black Boy Joy meets Black Girl Magic. It holds joy and magic at its core, even while exploring themes of grief, fear, and loss. Because that is precisely the magic of it all, and is exactly how joy operates in real time. This season holds joy at its core, by exploring the technology with which black folks [at all of our intersections] thrive, adapt, and reinvent.
My hope is that these plays bring you in, hold you tight, and provoke you to dream even bigger. Every time you come to our theatre, it should feel like a reunion, a celebration, a sacred place where people are SEEN and transformed. Experiencing truth in storytelling is PLEASURABLE and this season we hope to share that with you all.
Moving forward, your support is required. No Dream Deferred’s success rests squarely in the multitudes of hands that have been integral to its building thus far. No Dream Deferred can be the arts institution that we deserve… and in that hope, is both the Joy and Magic of New Orleans.
See you at the theatre!
